Description

SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide) is a small mitochondria-targeting peptide that has shown promise in improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress. It selectively binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilising mitochondrial structure, enhancing electron transport efficiency, and reducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Preclinical studies have demonstrated SS-31’s ability to improve mitochondrial bioenergetics in models of cardiac, renal, and neurodegenerative diseases. In a pivotal JCI Insight study (2017), SS-31 improved mitochondrial respiration and reduced oxidative damage in aging mice, restoring muscle function and endurance. In humans, SS-31 has undergone clinical trials for various conditions. A Phase 2a trial in patients with primary mitochondrial myopathy (PMM) showed that SS-31 improved exercise tolerance and mitochondrial ATP production (Karaa et al., JAMA Neurology, 2018)
